What is the Provincial Nominee Program?
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a Canadian immigration program that allows provinces and territories to nominate individuals for permanent residence in Canada.
The PNP is designed to help provinces and territories meet their specific economic needs. For example, a province might want to attract skilled workers to help fill labor shortages in specific industries.
Each province and territory has its own PNP. The requirements and processes vary from one PNP to another. However, there are two main types of PNP:
- The Express Entry Stream, which is aligned with the federal Express Entry system; and
- The non -Express Entry Stream, where you don’t need to be in the Express Entry pool to apply.
What territories are included in the PNP?
To be eligible for the PNP, you must first choose which territory you want to live in and then apply to that territory’s PNP. Here is a brief description of all eleven provinces and territories in Canada that have a PNP:
- Alberta: The Alberta Advantage Immigrant Program (AAIP) is the PNP for this western province. It offers several streams, including the Express Entry Stream, Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, and Opportunity Stream.

Choose the right pathway for you
The Canadian provincial nominee programs offer a great way to immigrate to Canada and obtain permanent residency. However, it is important to choose the right pathway for you and your family. Each province has different requirements and streams, so be sure to research the program thoroughly before applying.
The two most popular pathways to Canadian permanent residency are through the Non -Express Entry and Express Entry streams.
The Non-Express Entry stream is for candidates who do not have an Express Entry profile. If you are eligible for a provincial nominee program, you can apply directly to the province. However, the application processing time is longer for this stream.
The Express Entry stream is for candidates who have an Express Entry profile and meet the criteria of at least one of the federal economic immigration programs. If you are eligible for a provincial nominee program, you can apply to the province through your Express Entry profile. The application processing time is faster for this stream.
It is important to note that each province has different streams and requirements, so be sure to research the program thoroughly before applying.
How can I apply for PR through the PNP pathway?
Express Entry is the fastest way to obtain Canadian permanent residence. If you are eligible for a provincial nominee program, you can apply to the province through your Express Entry profile.
Follow the below steps to apply for PR through the PNP pathway:
Step 1: Create an Express Entry profile
To begin, you will need to create an Express Entry profile and enter your information into the Express Entry system.
Step 2: Receive and accept a nomination
If you are nominated by a Canadian province or territory, you will receive a message in your account with instructions on how to accept or reject the nomination.
Step 3: Receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence
If you accept the nomination, you will receive an invitation in your account with instructions on how to apply for permanent residence. You’ve 90 days to apply.
Step 4: Complete and submit your application
After you have received your Invitation to Apply, you will need to gather all the required supporting documents and create an online account with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You will then have 60 days to complete and submit your application for permanent residence.
There is also an application fee that must be paid when you submit your application.
Step 5: Attend a landing interview
Once IRCC has processed your application and you have met all the requirements, you will be scheduled for a landing interview. This is a short meeting with an immigration officer to confirm your identity and to ask you questions about your application.
Step 6: Get your permanent resident card
After you have attended your landing interview and been approved for permanent residence, you will need to pay permanent residence fees and submit your passport for processing. Once your permanent resident card is ready, you will be able to pick it up at a designated IRCC office or it will be mailed to you.
Congratulations, you are now a permanent resident of Canada!
